Our bicycle experts are riders with engineering backgrounds that can design, assemble and maintain a bicycle. Our work often involves reconstruction of how a collision occurred and how the rider was injured, whether there was a defect in the bicycle or its parts, or whether third party bicycle assembly or maintenance was a factor, and determination of whether the environment (road, street, path) or something in the environment (traffic signal, pothole, gate, grate, obstruction, bridge joint) was a factor. We do this for all types of bicycles: mountain, road, BMX, cross, downhill, recumbent, stationary and exercise.
Our experts inspect the bicycle and its components as well as motor vehicles that are involved, use data generated by scene investigators, use injury data, and apply the laws of physics and engineering and human factors concepts to determine how the collision occurred and the underlying causes. Involved experts could be: a bicycle expert; a human factors expert; a biomechanical engineer; a reconstructionist; and, a highway engineer.
- Were the rider’s actions improper in a manner that was a cause of the collision?
- Was the bicycle path, road or street improper in a manner that was a cause of the collision?
- Was the failure to use a helmet a cause of the severity of the injury outcome ?
- Was the bicycle properly sold and fitted to the rider?
- Was the bicycle design, assembly or maintenance improper in a manner that was a cause of the collision?
- Were components, aftermarket parts, or modifications a cause of the collision?
We have experience in every aspect of the bicycling world: we have ridden thousands of miles, operated and worked in shops, assembled hundreds of bicycles, repaired crashed bicycles, built custom wheels, designed and built frames, and “clean-sheet” engineered new bicycle models. We have worked professionally for bicycle manufacturers and raced bicycles competitively across the nation.
- Roadway Defect Causes Bicycle Collision
A cyclist on a city street encountered a power company grate in the street, his front tire went into a gap in the grate, he crashed and was injured.
We inspected the grate and showed that ordinary bicycle tires could readily be trapped by the gap, that the gap was in a normal bicycle travel path and that cyclist activity was common in the area. We also showed that gaps such as this have been known for a long time to be dangerous to cyclists, and that the gap made the grate dangerous in a manner that was a cause of the cyclist's crash and injuries.
This event was typical of other bicycle collisions. The case resolved through settlement.

- Bicycle Failure - Experts Investigate Bicycle Component Failure
A bicycle rider was catastrophically injured when he crashed a composite-framed, road bicycle. After the crash, the front fork (with wheel) and the right crankarm (with pedal) were found detached from the bicycle. The roadway in the area of the crash was unremarkable and not consistent with causing the crash. Robson Forensic was retained to determine if the bicycle was defective in a manner that caused the crash.
