We've all seen the famous photographs illustrating the construction of the Empire State Building.  Workers were perched on a steel beam high above the NYC skyline eating their lunch, while others “walked the steel” and “rode the hook” of the crane.  The photos evoke nostalgia, but these were less than idyllic conditions, as 14 men died during the construction of the edifice.
