The placement of different types of overhead lines on poles is governed by the National Electric Safety Code. Electric supply lines are placed in the upper area of the pole. Lines carrying the highest amount of energy or highest voltage are placed near the top of the pole with lower voltage lines placed below. Often a shield wire or static wire is strung above these lines to protect them from a lightning strike. Below the electric supply lines is a neutral space that separates the electric supply space from the communications space. This area protects communication workers from higher energy lines. The communication space consists of telephone, cable TV, fiber, and signal lines.

A construction worker was injured while installing aluminum flashing on the exterior of a building. At the time of the incident he was working on scaffolding, approximately 22 feet above the ground, when the aluminum flashing he was maneuvering came into contact with a high-tension electrical utility wire. The construction worker was shocked and fell to the ground through an unguarded opening in the scaffolding. An electrical engineer from Robson Forensic was retained to determine if the contractor and/or general contractor caused, failed to prevent, or permitted conditions to exist at the worksite which were unreasonably dangerous in a manner which caused the injury.

A fire broke out in a recently constructed upscale home during a heavy thunderstorm. Robson Forensic fire investigators were retained to investigate the fire and determine the origin and cause. Our investigator concluded that the origin of the fire was under the first floor where a hole was discovered in the flexible gas tubing. He determined that the hole had been created by a lightning strike. Based on these findings, additional Robson experts were engaged to determine if the work performed by the electrical contractor during the home’s construction was a cause of the hole in the gas tubing.
