Expert Witness Biography
Dr. Richard Lehman is a materials engineering expert who specializes in ceramic materials, including, glass and composite polymers. Dr. Lehman applies his expertise to forensic casework where the failure of a ceramic product, component, or coating is implicated in an injury or economic loss claim. Dr. Lehman’s expertise extends across consumer and industrial products, including specialty applications in the agricultural, construction, and telecommunications industries.
Dr. Lehman is currently an Associate Professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University where he is the Department Chair for Materials Science and Engineering. He is also the Director of the Corning Glass Science and Engineering Laboratory and the AMIPP Advanced Polymer Center. Dr. Lehman’s research interests center on the glass transition and the processing and properties of inorganic and organic glasses, particularly the mechanical, optical and chemical behavior of commercially important systems. His current research is focused on the mechanical and chemical properties of polymer blends, with principal attention towards immiscible blends, the behavior of multiphase composite interfaces, and applicability of these systems in structural and biomedical applications. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Lehman worked in industry for ten years, where he conducted applied research on ceramic materials for manufacturers of consumer and industrial products.
Dr. Lehman received his Ph.D. in Ceramics and Materials Engineering from Rutgers University, where he also earned his M.S. and B.S. degrees in Ceramic Science. Dr. Lehman is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society. He is also a member of the Materials Research Society, the Society of Plastic Engineers, and the Ceramic Association of New Jersey.
